In the fall of 1792 Alexander MacKenzie is considered to have founded Peace River when he had a fort built near the junction of the Peace & Smoky Rivers. As development progressed, Peace River attracted settlers interested in agriculture, mining, timber and oil opportunities. The river itself came to be known as "the highway of the north," as canoes, boats, and steam ships populated its waterways, including the famous D.A. Thomas steamboat that sank in 1929 after 15 years of service.
One of Peace River's most famous figures is Henry Fuller Davis, otherwise known as 12 Foot Davis due to his twelve foot land claim registered during the Cariboo Country gold rush in British Columbia. Davis' claim netted him almost $30,000.00 worth of gold, which he staked on a trading post close to where the Town of Peace River stands today.
